A beautifully upholstered divan can make a bedroom feel composed from every angle, but its storage only feels luxurious when it works effortlessly with the room. To configure a divan base drawer layout well, begin with the space around the bed rather than the amount you hope to store. The position of bedside tables, wardrobes, radiators and door swings will determine whether every drawer opens with the quiet ease you expect.
A divan base is one of the most discreet ways to introduce meaningful storage beneath the mattress. Unlike freestanding under-bed boxes, drawers are enclosed within the base, keeping spare bedding, seasonal layers and guest linens protected from view. The right configuration gives you the calm of an uncluttered bedroom without asking you to compromise on an elegant bed silhouette.
Configure a divan base drawer layout around your room
The most practical drawer layout is not always the one with the greatest number of drawers. A four-drawer divan offers generous capacity, for example, but only when there is sufficient clearance on both sides of the bed. In a more tailored bedroom scheme, a two-drawer arrangement may provide all the everyday storage required while preserving generous space for bedside furniture.
Before selecting a layout, measure from the edge of the bed base to the nearest obstruction. Allow for the full depth of a drawer when open, plus room to stand comfortably while reaching inside. This simple check prevents a drawer from meeting a bedside table leg, catching on a thick curtain, or reducing the walkway around the bed to an inconvenience.
Also consider how the bedroom is used at different times of day. A drawer facing a dressing area can be ideal for nightwear or folded clothes. One opening towards an en-suite may suit towels and spare toiletries. Storage should support the way you retire and rise, rather than becoming something you have to work around.
Two drawers: refined storage with fewer compromises
Two drawers, usually positioned on one side of the base, are an excellent choice where the bed sits closer to a wall or where a partner’s side needs to remain completely clear. They provide a useful home for linens and lighter bedding without making demands on every edge of the room.
This layout is especially considered for king size and super king beds in rooms with substantial bedside cabinets. It leaves one side free for furniture placement while still giving the base a purposeful storage function. If the bed will sit centrally with access from both sides, decide which side has the clearest uninterrupted run before confirming the drawer direction.
Four drawers: generous capacity for larger rooms
A four-drawer configuration is often the natural choice for a principal bedroom with enough circulation space on both sides. It creates separate compartments that are easier to organise: perhaps bedding on one side, pillows and throws on the other, or separate storage for each sleeper.
The trade-off is clearance. Four drawers need room at each side of the bed, and conventional full-length drawers may conflict with wide bedside chests. This is where careful planning makes a noticeable difference. A bed should never force you to reposition furniture every time you change the sheets.
Continental drawers: thoughtful clearance at the head end
Continental drawers are designed with this very problem in mind. Rather than using two full-length drawers along each side, the configuration includes smaller drawers near the head of the bed and larger drawers towards the foot. The reduced drawer length at the top creates valuable clearance for bedside tables.
For bedrooms where bedside tables are non-negotiable, continental drawers often offer the most polished solution. You retain significant storage capacity while allowing tables, lamps and charging points to sit naturally beside the headboard. It is a small technical detail, but one that gives a made-to-order bed the considered feel of a well-designed hotel suite.
End drawers: useful, but only with a clear foot of the bed
An end drawer opens from the foot of the divan and can be a sensible alternative when both sides of the bed are restricted. It suits rooms where the bed is positioned between furniture or near walls, provided there is a clear route at the foot.
Take particular care if there is a bench, ottoman, chest or television unit opposite the bed. The drawer must have space to extend without turning the end of the room into a bottleneck. End drawers are best reserved for bedrooms with an open footboard area and a generous central walkway.
Match drawer access to the bed position
The placement of the bed is the starting point for every configuration. A divan against one wall will normally benefit from drawers on the accessible side only. A bed centred beneath a statement headboard may allow for drawers on both sides, but bedside furniture still needs to be accounted for.
Radiators deserve the same attention. A drawer should not open directly into a radiator or encourage stored textiles to sit too close to a heat source. Similarly, consider low windows, projecting sills and floor-length curtains. A room can look perfectly spacious when the bed is undressed, yet become awkward once curtains are closed and bedside pieces are in place.
If you are planning a full bedroom redesign, mark the bed footprint and drawer opening zones on the floor with masking tape. It is a remarkably effective way to test the room before committing to a size, fabric or storage arrangement. Walk around the outline as you would on an ordinary morning, including opening wardrobe doors and passing through to an en-suite.
Decide what deserves a drawer
Divan drawers are most useful for items that are clean, folded and regularly needed, rather than for bulky possessions that are rarely accessed. Fresh bedding, duvet covers, pillowcases, spare towels, lightweight throws and seasonal pyjamas are all well suited. Separating these items by drawer keeps the bedroom feeling orderly long after the bed has been made.
Avoid overfilling drawers. A carefully upholstered base is built for everyday practicality, but drawers operate best when contents sit below the top edge and can move freely. Folding linens into breathable fabric organisers can make the space easier to maintain, particularly if you prefer a category for each drawer.
For a guest bedroom, drawer storage can be particularly welcoming. One drawer might hold an extra blanket and pillows, while another contains fresh towels. Guests enjoy a room that feels prepared, and you avoid filling wardrobe space with items they may not need.
Consider the details beneath the mattress
The base is only one part of the sleep system. A quality divan should provide a supportive foundation for the mattress while also meeting the practical needs of the room. Check that the selected drawer arrangement is compatible with your chosen bed size, base type and upholstery design. Made-to-order options can vary, especially across larger sizes and bespoke specifications.
Think, too, about delivery access. Divan bases are commonly supplied in sections to make them more manageable through stairwells and doorways, with the mattress resting across the assembled base. If your home has a narrow turn or upper-floor bedroom, discuss access in advance so the experience remains as considered as the bed itself.
Drawer configurations should also reflect who will use the bed. A family bedroom may prioritise easy access to spare bedding. A couple may prefer symmetrical storage. In a compact city flat, the practical answer could be drawers only on the open side, paired with a tailored headboard and a smaller bedside table. There is no universal best layout - only the one that honours your room and routines.
When drawers are not the best storage choice
A divan with drawers is wonderfully practical, but it is not the answer for every bedroom. If the available floor space is tight on every side, an ottoman storage bed may be more suitable. Its lifting platform gives access from above, so it does not require the side or end clearance needed by drawers.
Ottoman storage is particularly effective for larger or less frequently used items, such as suitcases, winter duvets and boxed keepsakes. The compromise is that access involves lifting the mattress platform, whereas a drawer offers immediate reach for smaller everyday essentials. Those who change bedding frequently or prefer clearly separated categories may still find a drawer base more enjoyable to live with.
A considered consultation can make these choices much easier. At Hyder Living, the finest result comes from treating size, upholstery, headboard, mattress and storage as one complete bedroom design, rather than a series of separate decisions.
Give the drawer layout the same attention you would give to fabric and headboard height. When every drawer opens freely and every essential has its place, the bed becomes more than a centrepiece - it becomes the quietly capable foundation of a more restful room.
